Papermaking is an energy intensive industry. Model group, a packaging manufacturer headquartered in Switzerland, has long service life and few spare parts. Its weinfelden factory in Switzerland has two giant paper machines nearly 80 meters long: these paper machines are driven by dozens of motors and operate around the clock to produce the raw material paper required by the annual output of the whole group of about 1.5 billion square meters of corrugated board.
In view of the problems encountered by the customer, abb experts put forward the upgrading scheme of motor and frequency converter, replacing 36 motors with abb IE4 motor and frequency converter with new ABB acs880 multi drive, making the aging No. 2 paper machine equipment look new. Model group’s calculation shows that high efficiency motors and frequency converters not only increase the production speed by 12.5%, but also save up to 900000 kwh of electricity every year.
Previously, paper with a width of 2.5 meters passed through the paper machine at a speed of 800 meters / minute. Today, the speed has reached 900 m / min and productivity has been greatly improved. In addition, after other upgrades, the new transmission solution has finally increased the running speed of the paper machine to 1000 m / min. The motor speed is reduced from 1500 rpm to 1000 rpm, which can optimize or even eliminate the gear connection, thus significantly reducing friction.
Stefan floeck, ABB’s motion control IEC low voltage motor business unit, said: “the success of the model group in this project perfectly demonstrates that energy conservation and efficiency will not increase business costs. On the contrary, modernization with the latest energy-efficient motors and frequency converters can directly promote performance improvement, energy conservation and emission reduction.”
